Plot Synopsis
In this sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, a joint American-Soviet expedition is sent to Jupiter to discover what went wrong with the U.S.S. Discovery against a backdrop of growing global tensions.
Among the mysteries the expedition must explain are the appearance of a huge black monolith in Jupiter’s orbit and the fate of H.A.L., the Discovery’s sentient computer. Based on the novel written by Arthur C. Clarke.
It has a strong cast featuring Roy Scheider, Helen Mirram and John Lithgow and develops the story based on the end of the novel 2001 in which DAVE BOWMAN sends a message to Earth describing a seemingly endless tunnel appearing in space – “my God, its full of stars”.
This is a very different movie to 2001 and one that deserves more attention, it has suffered from being the younger brother to a movie labelled as ‘cult’ or ‘classic’. It certainly feels more ‘mainstream’ but as far as sci-fi movies go, this is a great one.
The late Sir Arthur makes a cameo appearance - sitting on a park bench in front of the White House, feeding the pigeons. He is also seen on the cover of Time magazine, as the American President.
