| ICE AGE is a broad, character-based
comedy that takes us twenty-thousand years back in time to a wondrous world inhabited
by great, majestic creatures. It is a story about four dysfunctional characters:
MANNY, an acerbic woolly mammoth; SID, an irreverent, unsocialized sloth; and
DIEGO, a scheming saber-toothed tiger. This unlikely trio are forced to work together
to return a human baby to its family. What the mammoth and sloth don’t know, is
that the saber is leading them into an ambush – one in which they might be killed |

As these three make their way across
the vast, ice-covered landscape, another creature, a prehistoric squirrel / rat
known as SCRAT, tries desperately to carry out his mission in life – to bury an
acorn – which, alas, triggers calamitous events. When we first meet Manny, he
uses his sarcastic wit to shield himself and his feelings. But Manny’s journey
in this movie will eventually allow him to embrace the world that he has initially
turned his back on. |
Sid is a fast talking, slow moving
sloth who freeloads off anyone he can. In no time at all, Sid steps in some trouble.
It’s lucky for him that he runs into Manny who reluctantly saves Sid’s hide. Unable
to unload his newfound baggage, Manny unwillingly becomes Sid’s “protector” and
gets roped into helping Sid return a lost human baby to its family.
Joining them on the trip is Diego, a cold, scheming saber-toothed tiger, who convinces
them that he can track the humans a lot faster than they can. With the weather
worsening and time running out, Manny agrees to let Diego lead them. But Diego
has a secret agenda of his own. Having recently failed SOTO, the leader of his
pack, Diego must save face by delivering Manny, Sid and the baby to the tigers
as bounty.

After a journey in
which the foursome narrowly escape avalanches, battle over food with a hapless
flock of doomsday dodos, explore the mysteries of a diaper, careen through a prehistoric
roller coaster of ice funnels and traverse ice bridges over lakes of volcanic
lava, an unexpected bond develops between them. Diego becomes more and more conflicted
about his agenda because this group has become a family. He must decide whether
to continue with his sinister plan, or defy his own pack and help the others accomplish
their mission of returning the baby to its family.
As for Scrat … he probably still is trying to retrieve that cursed acorn. |
